And dimed7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() You might expect a bit of grumbling, some signs here and there of unrest- graffiti on the hortatory posters in the break room, muffled guffaws during our associate meetings but I can detect none of that. The cook at the Radio Grill has two other jobs. Doesn’t she get awfully tired? Nah, it’s what she’s always done. I sit with Lynne in the break room one night and find out this is only a part-time job for her-six hours a day-with the other eight hours spent at a factory for $9 an hour. With competence comes a new impatience: Why does anybody put up with the wages we’re paid? True, most of my fellow workers are better cushioned than I am they live with spouses or grown children or they have other jobs in addition to this one. Why not? Low pay is a big part of the story, but it’s the demand for conformity that really rubs her the wrong way: As you might expect, Barbara Ehrenreich didn’t like working at Wal-Mart. ![]()

Essentialism by Greg McKeown7/6/2023 ![]() He writes that the question we all need to ask ourselves is, not how we can do it all, but who gets to choose what we will and will not do. McKeown points out it takes courage to eliminate opportunities and obligations, because it's not just a mental discipline, it is an emotional discipline to reject social pressure. ![]() The more things in your life that you leave in the gray area, the less focus you will give to your most meaningful priorities. ![]() ![]() Life is never as simple as things that "make the highest possible contribution toward my goal" and things that "don't make the highest possible contribution toward my goal," there is a lot of gray area, and we often want to please our colleagues, family and friends by saying, "yes" to them. The question essentialists ask themselves when weighing opportunities and obligations is,"Will this activity or effort make the highest possible contribution toward my goal?" Non-essentialists will sign-up for more efforts without carefully considering if if will advance their goal, they often sign-up simply because someone asks them. Part of their logic is because they will completely commit to only one or two efforts, they will deliberately consider a broad set of options so they are certain they make the right decisions. ![]() According to McKeown, a core difference between "essentialists" and "non-essentialists" is essentialists actually consider and evaluate more options than their non-essentialist counterparts. ![]()

Jackie morris the lost spells7/6/2023 ![]() Some are summoning spells to remind us of what we can no longer see. There are new spells here, which we are invited to read aloud, speak from memory or sing. Its message is the importance of naming and knowing the living world, and it reminds us of what we lose when nature and the language of nature slips from our lives. There are still the stunning illustrations by Jackie Morris and the delightful lines and poems from Robert Macfarlane, but this book urges us to engage more fully with our environment. It's a book to be held in the hand, or slipped into a pocket, and taken everywhere. ![]() 'The Lost Spells' may be a companion volume to the formidable bestseller that was 'The Lost Words', but it couldn't look or feel more different. A small format hardback with beautiful endpapers, astonishing illustrations, magical and musical verse and evocations, and a gold ribbon to mark your page! It's a wonder! ![]()

Black on both sides c riley snorton7/6/2023 ![]() In tracing the genealogies of blackness and transness, Snorton follows multiple trajectories, from the medical experiments conducted on enslaved Black women to the negation of blackness. Riley Snorton identifies multiple intersections between blackness and transness from the mid-19th century to present-day anti-Black and anti-trans legislation and violence.ĭrawing on a varied archive of materials, Snorton attends to how slavery and the production of racialized gender provided the foundations for an understanding of gender as mutable. Their erasure from trans history masks the ways race has figured prominently in the construction and representation of transgender subjects. Her celebrity, however, has obscured other mid-century trans narratives. ![]() ![]() The story of Christine Jorgensen, America's first prominent transsexual, narrated trans embodiment in the postwar era. ![]()

The princess test gail carson levine7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But it all goes wrong when Rosella is carried off by a prince who doesn’t care if she exhausts herself speaking as long as he gets the jewels, and Myrtle uses her new powers to blackmail the villagers and get everything she wants! “The Fairy’s Mistake” – The fairy Levana is just trying to follow tradition when she enchants kind Rosella to produce jewels every time she speaks–and when she enchants Rosella’s nasty sister Myrtle to spew toads and bugs with every word. ![]() The stories are loosely connected, but all stand on their own too. Set in the Kingdom of Biddle, each story riffs on at least one fairy tale, but always with Levine’s gift for bringing a practical eye to silly situations. I reread these before the Once Upon a Time Challenge began, but it’s still an appropriate time for a review! Among my favorites of her books are The Princess Tales, six very short novels, which I bought combined into one (400-page) volume, The Fairy’s Return and Other Princess Tales. ![]() I’m a huge fan of Gail Carson Levine’s Ella Enchanted, and I consider her clever twists on fairy tales to be literary ancestors of my own writing. ![]() |
